The John Roan School deserves better than this!

For the latest news, click here

The John Roan is a fantastic local school, with a long history and a potentially great future. But the council plans to move it from two spacious highly valuable sites beside Greenwich Park to a site that is a quarter of the size in a construction wasteland on the Greenwich peninsula.

This site will give you more information about the campaign.  Click here to view our main concerns about the proposed move. These are to do with:

·        location and size of site

·        pollution and congestion

·        catchment area

·        the absence of any contingency plan

Who are we?

We are a group of parents, teachers, community members and former Roan students with an interest in the school who are unhappy about this move. We care passionately about the school and its future and we are deeply concerned about the current plans. Since details of the proposed move were made public at the end of 2006, we have been campaigning to raise questions about the move – and to get the best deal for the school.

We’re keen to hear from you. Please e-mail us with any suggestions about what we could do to make an even bigger impact, or just to give us your views of the campaign or this website.

Why we are campaigning

We feel that the proposed move of the John Roan School to the Greenwich Peninsula sells the school short. If the school is to be moved to the Peninsula, we would like to see it given a bigger site in a different location. It seems unlikely that this will be given us, since the separate sites on the Peninsula have already been allocated. The governing body says that this means we should join forces with them and work to make the best of the proposed site.

We feel that the planned site, however creative its design and however much it is tweaked, will not offer our students, current and future, the kind of school that is the long-term ambition of all those who support the John Roan. For these reasons, and in the absence of a better location on the Peninsula, we would like to see the same energy and creativity channelled into rethinking and refurbishing the existing sites, so that our students can continue to benefit from its historic location while attending a school equipped for the twenty-first century, and the communities of Greenwich continue to have a state school in their midst of which they can be proud.
