Key players
The decision to move the John Roan to the Peninsula has still not yet been taken, although the Council has approved the planning application for a new school on the Peninsula. On this screen we list the key players who are involved in the decision. If you want to write to them, click here .
The John Roan Foundation
Is a charity dating back to the 17th century with the main purpose of providing education for the children of Greenwich
Owns the name of the school, the Maze Hill site, the playing fields and other property in the Greenwich area
Has not agreed to the move and is concerned about preserving the value of its charity assets (i.e. the Maze Hill site)
Has stated that the playing fields cannot be included in the planning submission if it is not submitted in the name of the John Roan School
The John Roan School governing body
Has given its agreement, in principle, to the move but subject to ‘a number of issues’ being addressed; these issues reflect at least five of our main concerns
Is pressing for the proposed site to be improved
Has not clarified what will happen if these issues are not addressed
We wrote to the chair of governors for a clarification of the governors’ position and received a reply that, we feel, fails to answer our main concerns. To see our letter to the chair click here, and her reply to us, click here
In the planning board meeting, the chair of governors said that the current proposals were for a school that was, in effect, not fit for purpose. Despite her presentation, and that of the deputy chair, planning was approved without their issues being cited as conditions
Greenwich Council
Submitted planning application at the beginning of the summer holidays and approved the submission in a meeting on 30 August 2007 but made clear that this was an application that had nothing to do with the relocation of the John Roan School
The chair of the planning board and the leader of the Council withdrew from the meeting citing conflict of interests due to their involvement with the John Roan Foundation, the John Roan School and the Building Schools for the Future programme - none of which represents a conflict of interest if the school under discussion was not the John Roan!
Remains wholly committed to the move and determined that a school will be built on the Peninsula in any case
Says that the decision to move the John Roan School is still down to the Foundation and the school’s governing body
Feeder primary schools, parents, teachers and students
From our anecdotal experience, do not feel they have been consulted and, generally, are shocked when they hear what has been proposed
Teachers, said to be 100% behind the move (according to the school’s senior management), are in fact much more divided, with a large number unconvinced by what is proposed
Meridian Delta Limited
As developers of the Greenwich Peninsula, agreed with English Partnerships what organisations and building would feature on the Peninsula
Had always identified the proposed site as the location for a secondary school that they would open in 2018, but with a much smaller student population than that of the proposed school
Agreed to bring the building forward by nine years when the Council approached them with the proposal that the John Roan School be relocated to that site
